Victoria Reyes, local author and Assistant Professor in the Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies at UCR, is coming to Cellar Door Bookstore for an in-person conversation with fellow UCR Associate Professor Flip Tanedo. They will be talking about Victoria Reyes's new book, Academic Outsider: Stories of Exclusion and Hope, on sale now!
Many enter the academy with dreams of doing good; this is a book about how the institution fails them, especially if they are considered "outsiders." It deftly blends personal stories with social theory to uncover and critically examine different spaces within the hierarchical world of the academy. Reyes thematically organizes a set of her own lived experiences--from navigating coded language in conversations with senior scholars, to balancing the ever-expanding list of professional expectations with family care-taking responsibilities, to managing life during a global pandemic--and uses them to deconstruct the academic institution itself, laying bare its failures.
To join us for this crucial and interesting conversation between two brilliant educators teaching at the University of California, Riverside, you can purchase Academic Outsider: Stories of Exclusion and Hope in-store (or purchase online below) or register for the event here to add a donation (suggested is $5, but pay what you can).
