If you haven’t read The Book Thief yet, let this recommendation be the excuse you need to get started. Death narrates and guides the reader through Liesel Meminger’s childhood in Nazi Germany and tells how she becomes the Book Thief. For starters, the writing is immaculate and surprising; I can’t even begin to count how many times I had to pause and sigh, doe-eyed, at a beautiful phrase. Death handles each character with that same care, giving complexity to Nazi, Jew, or German citizen alike. The Book Thief gives a snapshot of one of human history’s darkest times while professing the human condition. It is simply one of those novels that go down in literary history as plain important to read.— Destenie
