I really hate the cover of Empire Falls. It made me anticipate a Gilmore Girls kind of book, and though I completely loved that show, Russo’s vision of this fictional small town in Maine runs much deeper and much darker; but you won’t know you’re traveling to that place of revelation because the journey is filled with humor, though often dark, and characters you begrudgingly hug at the end of the day. Do you want to understand income inequality complete with the humanity of revenge, disappointment, entrapment? Forget Hillbilly Elegy; read Empire Falls. These characters are your neighbors, whether you’re from Riverside or a small town in the Midwest, and it’s important you get to know them. But how much better to know them through the brilliant, seductive prose of this Pulitzer Prize winning novel. Incredible!
