A tale told from two perspectives of loves lost, a mother’s quest for revenge, mysterious deaths, and the mystique of foxes, all woven together with the most exquisite of storytelling. Choo’s writing is much like the magic of the foxes: enchanting, mesmerizing, and heartbreaking. Snow gives up the relative safety of the countryside to find a man, a man she wishes to kill, but a beautiful woman traveling alone in early 1900s China takes certain risks, even a fox woman. Bao is a detective of sorts; his strength is in his ability to know when someone is lying, a “gift” that he has had since childhood when his nanny prayed for a Fox’s help. When he is asked to find the name of a young woman found frozen but smiling on the doorstep of a restaurant, he begins a quest that will take him into a past that has haunted him. As the myriad motivations of both humans and foxes come to light, you will find yourself anxiously turning pages, hoping these characters whom you have come to love will…ah, but I can’t tell you that, can I? Enjoy!

“This slow burn of a novel is part mystery, part fable, all character. The novel alternates between the stories of Snow, a fox woman seeking revenge, and Bao, a private investigator who can hear lies, until their stories inevitably intertwine.”
