If you made it to Cellar Door Book Club's discussion of Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, you met Vorris Nunley, Associate Professor of English at UC Riverside. Now join us for an in-depth virtual discussion led by Professor Nunley, where we'll explore and examine how Parable of the Sower argues for ways to embody what it means to do, think, and be otherwise - making for a better now and a different future.
Utilizing Queer theory (ways of being "human" outside of normative categories and institutional authority), Depth psychology (valuing soul and the dark feminine), and Gnosticism (early religion as spirituality and inner authority), we will map how the novel offers a blueprint for thinking through and embodying logics outside of traditional ways of being and doing in the world, which continue to constrain, exclude, and exile in a pandemic-riddled world.
To join, please register below to add a donation (suggestion is $5, but pay what you can!). You can also purchase a copy of Parable of the Sower to be added to the guest list!
